Don’t Overthink It
A frustrated client described how much they were THINKING about taking actions and spent very little time doing what they said they wanted to do. My response was to share the 80/20 rule. The 80/20 rule is pretty simple: Success = 80% ACTION and 20% THOUGHT.
What would happen if you spent 80% of your time in ACTION mode and only 20% of the time thinking through it?
How much more would you be getting done if you were spending most of your time actually doing it rather than thinking about doing it?
Getting caught up in the thinking stages of a plan is very common. The key is to break through that apprehension of leaving the starting line, and jumping in. I call this being an ‘Action Captain’.
It starts with awareness.
Pay attention to how much time, energy, and contemplation you are giving to getting started. Break out of your own head by putting on paper the direction you’d like to take toward getting a project done. Start with the end in mind. What is your desired goal or outcome for your project? Use that as a finish line and work backwards, creating action steps as you go. This process should lead you to the first step needed in order to get you moving in the right direction.
Once you get started you’ll be amazed how much you will accomplish. Movement lessens the feeling of being overwhelmed, which will free you from doubt.
You’re doing your business (and yourself) a disservice by sitting on the sidelines waiting to get started. Instead, launch and learn. What have you got to lose?
